Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the “fantastic world” of 3rd grade. My name is Mrs. Maisha Bradley and I will be your child’s teacher for the 2009-2010 school year. I am looking forward to an exciting year of teaching and a great year of learning for your child. My philosophy for learning is that each child is unique, and each child learns in a different way. One of my jobs as a teacher is to help your child discover his or her individuality and work alongside them to maximize it. I believe in hands-on experiences, and learning creatively. I am dedicated to making this a successful and joyous year for you and your child. To ensure this success, we must keep the lines of communication open. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school before 8:00 a.m. and after 3:15 p.m. each day by either e-mail (teachme.mtb@gmail.com) or the school office. I will be happy to return your e-mail or call as soon as possible. However, I will not be able to reply to e-mails or accept calls during the instructional day.

Rules and Guidelines for Mrs. Bradley's Class

It’s the beginning of the school year and I would like every student to be a successful, productive citizen. In order to accomplish this goal, I have devised the following classroom rules that will be utilized on a daily basis.

Classroom rules

Show respect for school and personal property.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Listen carefully and follow directions the first time.
Raise your hands when you have something to say.
Work quietly and do not disturb others.
Complete all work on time.
Have a positive attitude!!!

Consequences

1st Offense: Verbal warning
2nd Offense: Student/teacher conference
3rd Offense: Note in agenda, parent/teacher/student conference, loss of privileges, time out, office referral, etc.

Your child’s behavior can be tracked daily by simply looking inside his/her Homework book.

Parents, please sign your child’s Homework daily as it is a form of communication.

Incentives

Students can earn the following incentives by following the class and school rules: lunch with the teacher, stickers, treats, positive notes, and free time.

Welcome to the third grade! To help you prepare for next year, here are some supplies you will need to purchase for your child and our classroom.

As we move into the Reading and Writing Workshop as a way to teach and support our children to become passionate readers and writers, it may be necessary to request additional supplies. However, I believe the above is the bulk of what will be needed.

Please make sure your child reads a book from the summer booklist you were given from Mrs. Arcaro. We will begin our book talks the first week in September.

I wanted to take a minute to acknowledge the wonderful impact that Mrs. Hungate has had on room 102. I've been so impressed with how much the kids are learning and doing in class! I've enjoyed hearing about the science experiments, what they're learning in social studies, and about the writing projects. Thanks to Mrs. Hungate for going the extra mile so many times and for all of her hard work and dedication this year--we'll miss her!

At the same time, I want to welcome Mrs. Kuney back to room 102. Henry and I are looking forward to getting to know her and to having a great second half of the year. I appreciate her willingness to come into the classroom to help with the transition.

Dear Families,
There are many business items to mention so I’ll get right into the past week’s highlights! During writing workshop, the students used a publishing checklist to help them follow the steps of the writing process as they publish their “How-to-Do-Something” stories. In reading workshop we began to discuss another reading strategy readers must use: making inferences. We learned that authors don’t directly tell us everything we need to know as we’re reading. Good readers must use story clues and their background knowledge to figure some things out and make their best guesses, or inferences.
In science, the students used measuring tools including graduated cylinders, thermometers, and balances to measure objects using the metric system. My favorite part of the week was social studies. We had a “map museum” so that the students could explore each other’s neighborhood maps, and the students shared their Family Heritage sheets. It was so much fun to see your neighborhoods and learn more about your backgrounds!
Some reminders:
· Dress Down Day for Charity: Students who bring in a dollar tomorrow will be able to not wear a uniform on Wednesday.
· Joke Page Volunteer Project: Students need to bring in their joke pages tomorrow.
· Blue assessment folders: Please review and sign or initial all contents and return the folder tomorrow.
· Permission slips: Please return permission slips for trips to the Philadelphia Family Courthouse and the Keswick Theater by Wed., December 3rd.
· Holiday Show: The students will be performing the song “Must Be Santa” at the holiday show on Wed. December 10th. Abby Longo, Ally’s mother, is teaching the children signs so they can also perform the song in sign language!

Dear Families,

During writing workshop this past week, many students began editing and recopying their “How-to-Do Something” stories. The stories cover a wide variety of topics including how to clear the table, how to make a friend, how to plant a flower, how to make a scroll, and how to do a knee flip on a trampoline!

In reading workshop we discussed another reading strategy good readers use: asking questions. We charted our questions as we read an interesting story titled Charlie Anderson. As we read further, the students discovered that some of their questions were answered directly in the story, while other questions required them to use both story clues and their background knowledge to figure out the answers.

In math the students collected data of the number of pockets each student had (TreSean had the most that day with 8!) and displayed the class data in a tally chart and a bar graph. We also learned how to find the middle number in a group of data. In social studies we discussed expressions of culture and family heritage. Another highlight of the week was our science experiment in which the students made hypotheses of how many centimeter cubes it would take to make a small cup of water overflow. Can you guess how many cubes?

Some reminders:

· Blue assessment folders: This week the students will be receiving their blue assessment folders containing recent assessments and classwork. Please review and sign or initial all contents and return the folder the following day.

· Half-day on Wednesday: Dismissal is at 12:09pm.

· Family heritage homework : Students need to turn in their Family Heritage sheet by Thursday. I can’t wait to learn more about them.

Dear Families,

This past Friday we celebrated the students’ hard work on their small moment stories in writing workshop. The children chose their favorite parts of their stories and read them to the class. After the sharing time, we enjoyed a toast with apple juice. I hope to display the students’ stories outside our classroom to share with our school community. The students also continued to work on their “How-to-do Something” stories. They are becoming teachers and writers! I have encouraged the children to bring in any examples of “How-to” writing they might have at home to help us study this genre of writing.

In reading workshop, we discussed writing reader responses. In a reader response, the students write their thoughts about a story or book. If reading a fiction story, students might write about a connection they made to their own lives or another book and how the connection helped them understand they story. When responding to nonfiction, the students might write about something they found interesting or something new that they learned. Other highlights from our week included our “Lines” and “Sink or Float” experiments in science and our math assessment, which will be returned this week.

Some reminders:

· Interim reports: Please sign and return the bottom slip of your child’s interim report.

· Class contact list: Please return the class contact list with any needed changes/updates. If your family’s information is correct, please indicate that on the sheet.

· Social Studies neighborhood map project: Last week the students received paper for their neighborhood map projects. Their maps are due Monday, November 17^th. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

· Family customs and traditions: In upcoming Social Studies lessons we will be discussing culture and family heritage. I encourage families to talk about their culture and any family traditions to support our work in the classroom.

Small moment stories in 102

Friday morning the class had a celebration and read parts of their small moment stories. Everyone did a great job! So many great stories. The students were obviously proud of their work and enjoyed sharing their favorite parts with the class. At the end, they toasted with a cup of juice.

Of course I forgot to take pictures... Hopefully we'll get some at the Harvest Feast on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Dear Families,

What an exciting week we had celebrating our World Series Champion Phillies and Halloween! On Friday we had a Halloween-themed day: we wrote Halloween riddles, read Halloween stories, and created “monster sandwiches.” We also estimated how many mini candy bars were in a jar and made a bar graph showing 102 students’ favorite candy. The children were surprised at how many candy bars were in the jar (63) and discovered that most students choose Skittles as their favorite candy!

Other highlights of the week were making maps of our classroom, beginning our How-to-Do-Something writing project, and learning about visualization in reading workshop. The students learned that good readers visualize (make a picture in their heads) when they read. Readers think about the author’s words and their background knowledge (what they already know about a subject) when visualizing to help them better understand a story and remain involved and interested.

Some business items:

· Interim reports: You should have received by mail, or will be receiving soon, your child’s interim report. The bottom slip of the report needs to be signed and returned to me.

· Math Unit 3 Family Letter: We are starting a new unit in math this week, Unit 3. I encourage you to read the Family Letter in your child’s Home Link workbook (Home Link 2.14) so you can see what concepts we will be learning. The Unit 2 Math Assessment is on Wednesday.

· Social Studies neighborhood map project: Today your child received instructions for a social studies project, making a map of his/her neighborhood. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Dear Families,

This past week we were able to celebrate an exciting event: Erik got his cast off! Another highlight for many 102 students was publishing their small moment stories in writing workshop. In reading workshop we discussed how good readers try to figure out how characters are feeling in stories by thinking about a character’s words and actions, by looking for clues in illustrations, and by thinking about how they would feel if in the character’s situation. The students also enjoyed the opportunity to learn some sign language from Ally’s mom, Abby.

In math, we are coming to the end of Unit 2 and will have an assessment next week, tentatively Wednesday, November 5^th. Worksheets from this week’s homework are review for the assessment. I also encourage students to practice the Fact Triangles cut out from their Math Home Links book to increase their automaticity with addition and subtraction facts.

Some reminders:

· Home and School Release Forms: If your family has not returned the Release Form for photos, videos and student work for the Home and School Association, your child received a form in his/her green folder today. This form is not the photo waiver distributed by Meredith over the summer; this release form covers Home and School activities including our class page on the Home and School web site (http://meredith2015.blogspot.com/ ). We have some wonderful pictures of the class from our walking trip, Phillies Day, and other activities but we cannot post them for families to see unless we have the release form. If you have any questions about the release, please contact me and I can pass them along to Home and School.

· Trip to Johnson’s Farm tomorrow: Please make sure your child has a bag lunch labeled with name and 102 and is dressed warmly for outside activities. The children should bring spending money if they want to shop at the Farm Market, Bakery and Gift Shop.

Dear Families,

We had another busy week! On Tuesday the students enjoyed special treats to celebrate our October birthdays: Alyssa, Joei, Kate, and Ka’alana. (Last month, I forgot to mention that we enjoyed a celebration to honor Ahmad, our September birthday child!) Thank you to all the parents for organizing the celebrations.

In writing workshop, many children began editing their small moment stories. They looked for places where they needed capital letters and punctuation and tried to fix spelling. In reading workshop, we worked on comparing and contrasting characters. In math, the students generated addition and subtraction facts to complete fact families.

We also had an interesting week in social studies. We began by discussing what kinds of things you might find and places people share in a neighborhood. The students then explored maps of Historic Philadelphia and Queen Village and learned how to use a map key. Friday morning the students enjoyed a walking trip of a few streets around Meredith and noted street names, directions (N, S, E, and W), murals, businesses, and Weccacoe Park. We also got to pass Blake’s house! Thank you to all the chaperones who joined us.

Some reminders:

· Trip to Johnson Farms: As you know, we are replacing the Linvilla Orchards field trip on Tuesday, October 28^th with a trip to Johnson Farms. The cost of the trip is $12.00. Please return money (in an envelope labeled with your child’s name) and permission slips by tomorrow, Wednesday, October 22th. If you would like to chaperone, the cost is also $12.00.

· Half-day: There is early dismissal tomorrow, Wednesday, October 22^nd , at 12:09pm.

Dear Families,

I hope you enjoyed the Columbus Day holiday!

I’ll move right into highlights from last week. In writing workshop, the students continued to revise their small moment stories. We discussed how writers sometimes have to take out parts where they might have repeated themselves so their stories make sense. In reading workshop, we discussed using clues from the title, words, and illustrations of a story to figure out the setting – both when and where a story takes place. In math the students practiced using different strategies like the +9 shortcut to remember addition facts more quickly.

In social studies, the children finished their brochures describing a government service (look for them in the hallway outside our classroom) and explored the terms country, state, city, suburb and neighborhood. Finally, our Class 102 scientists did an experiment to answer the question, “Which ball will bounce the highest?” Can you predict whether it was the baseball, the tennis ball, the golf ball or the ping pong ball?

Some business items:

· Snack: We are low on snack. Although I know that individually-packed items are more expensive and use more packaging, it’s helpful to have some of those items for days when I’m pressed for time. A mix of individually-packed items and boxes/packages would be great!

· Scholastic orders: The children have received two kinds of Scholastic orders. The Scholastic order form that says “Click!” at the top is for computer items and is handled by our Computer Teacher, Mr. Derstine. The other form is just for books. If your child would like to order books, please send in the order form and payment by this Thursday,October 16^th.

Dear Families,

Today the students learned about a new task that will be assigned for homework each week: spelling words. These spelling words are a part of our Word Study in Reading Workshop. Each week, I will choose 5 words to focus on for spelling. These words come from the students’ writing pieces – words they are using in their writing but need help spelling.

Each week for homework the students will do at least 2 of the activities (of course, they are welcome to do more! ) described on the spelling activity sheet that we reviewed today. This activity sheet should stay in the green home folders. I am asking caregivers to give their children a short spelling quiz at the end of the week on the words. You can sign the homework schedule indicating that you gave your child a quiz.

Thank you to our Flat Stanley chaperones! Following are some other highlights from the short week. In writing workshop, we discussed endings for our small moment stories. In reading workshop, we sorted the 3 sounds of –ed and continued our discussion of how making text-to-self connections helps readers better understand stories and characters’ feelings and actions. In social studies the students learned the parts of community governments and began making “brochures” describing a government service. The Unit 1 Math assessment the children took last week will be returned mid-week.

One quick reminder: There is no school on Thursday in observance of Yom Kippur.

Dear Families,

Thank you to all who were able to attend Thursday’s Back to School Night at Meredith! I enjoyed seeing you and hope the information was helpful. I forgot to mention a few points regarding homework. Homework is meant to be reinforcement for that day’s lesson or teaching points on previous days. I encourage students to do just that day’s homework to build the habit of daily homework that will be the routine as they move through the grades. If your family has an engagement one evening during the week and your child needs to complete an assignment early, that is fine. I check some homework assignments the day they are due, and others on Fridays.

Today the students received a laminated counting grid to help with math homework throughout the year. If your child does his /her homework at home, I suggest leaving the grid in his/her homework spot. Children who do homework primarily at afterschool should leave the grid in their green home folders with their homework schedules.

On to highlights from last week…In writing workshop, the students learned to focus on the most important part of their small moment stories and also weave in their thoughts and feelings with the events. In reading workshop we brainstormed strategies good readers use to help them read tricky words and understand the text. This exercise helped me see what strategies they are already using and what strategies I will be introducing them to for the first time throughout the next two months.

In math we studied reading a thermometer and skip-counting on the calculator. Some students built “buildings” with Base-10 blocks and calculated their values, while others used dominoes to write multiple addition facts. In science, the students wrote about what they wanted to learn and how they would “do science” to learn about it. They also enjoyed a sock investigation where the students had to place their hands inside a sock, feel an unknown object, and describe the object to their group members without ever looking inside the sock.

A few reminders for the week:

· There is no school Tuesday and Wednesday in observance of Rosh Hashanah.

· If you are chaperoning the Flat Stanley performance on Friday, I will send home a note on Thursday with details about arrival times at school and the theater.

Dear Families,

I hope this letter finds you well! We’ve had another busy week here in Class 102. In writing workshop, the students are learning to write “small moment” stories, in which students write about something that happened to them and stretch out the moment by adding interesting details. The students are learning from “mentor authors” such as Vera Williams, Ezra Jack Keats, and even a fourth grader here at Meredith. In reading workshop, the students shared personal connections to the poem “I Am Tired of Being Little” by Jack Prelutsky and enjoyed creating movements to go along with the words.

In math, the students are learning more games that will help them maintain skills throughout the year. They really enjoyed playing the Number-Grid Game. This game gives them practice with the number grid, a tool they will be using often. In science, students worked in groups to closely observe buttons and write about their properties. The students also worked in groups in social studies to create role-plays. In these short skits, the groups each acted out a situation demonstrating being a good citizen in their school or neighborhood communities.

One quick reminder: Permission slips, emergency contact forms, and money for the October 3^rd field trip to see the Flat Stanley production are due tomorrow (Tuesday, September 23^rd). Please place money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name.

Dear Families,

It has been a busy start to second grade! We are learning new routines and discussing how to make our classroom a place where everyone wants to be and can do important work. The students wrote about their hopes for second grade (see them in the hallway) and thought about what classroom rules are needed to make their hopes come true. Later this week we will finish writing our classroom rules together and I will send a copy home to families.

Here are some other highlights from the week. In our daily writing workshop, the students are writing personal stories. I have really enjoyed getting to know them better through their writing! In reading workshop, we have discussed taking good care of our classroom library and choosing “just-right” books for independent reading. In math we have been reviewing how to count money, tell time, and use the counting grid. The students have also been practicing addition facts through a fun game called “Addition Top-It.” We began the Social Studies curriculum by considering the different roles we have as members of our families and communities.

Other items to note:

· Homework: Today the children received their first homework schedule sheet detailing the homework they will have each day in addition to reading. Students will be given homework Monday through Thursday. They will receive a homework assignment sheet each Monday. Students will keep this sheet and any homework worksheets in the green home folder. Students should complete that day’s homework only and not try to move ahead. Please sign your child’s homework when he/she completes it.

· “How I Get Home from School Each Day” form: This form should be in your child’s green home folder. Please complete it and have your child return it tomorrow.

· Field trip to see Flat Stanley: We are going to see a performance about Flat Stanley on October 3^rdat the Zellerbach Theater. Soon your child will bring home a permission slip and emergency contact form. For any field trips that require money, please place money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name.

Hi, everyone,

I'm the administrator for the Meredith2015 blog. I'd like to welcome anyone who has notices, reminders, or other materials that they'd like posted to send them to me, and I'll put them up. It would be great to have students or parents write something about their experiences on field trips or school activities--over the years, it will be fun to look back at all the posts.

You can email posts to me at sws at mail.med.upenn. edu, or give me something written and I'll type it up.

Henry and I are looking forward to a great school year!

Souvenir products adorned with second graders' artwork

Thanks to Ms. Mitauer, you can now buy a t-shirt or a mug adorned with the artwork of this year's second graders, produced back when they were in first grade. To see examples of the art and what you can buy, click here.

Supply list for Ms. Palumbo's class (room 103)

4 two-pocket folders (one each in red, black, blue, and either yellow or green);
5 composition notebooks (one each in red, black, blue, green, and yellow) - if you can't find the colored books you can color then in with markers;
1 dry erase marker;
1 sock or eraser;
Crayons or colored pencils (no markers);
Ruler with centimeters and metric measure;
Pencil sharpener;
1 box tissues;
1 box plastic bags (1 gallon size);
Disinfectant wipes.

Supply list for Ms. Kuney's class (room 102)

The following is a list of supplies for Ms. Kuney's class for the coming school year. We hope to have an updated list soon.

School supplies for room 102

Please label the front of all books and folders with first and last name, room number and subject.

4 Black marble copybooks for math, writing journal, science/social studies and homework;
Folders: Yellow for writing, blue for tests, red for classwork, 2 green home folder (please label the left inside pocket of both home folders "Bring home" and the right inside pocket "Return to school").;
Box of markers (no more than 12 markers, please);
2 soft pink erasers with your child's name on the back;
One cloth or plastic zipper pouch for sharpened pencils and erasers;
A schoolbag;
One dry erase eraser (a sock will also do the job);
A small sharpener with a lid.

Please be sure to put the student's name and "Room 102" on all sweaters!

Supplies for the classroom

We will share these supplies; you do not need to label them.

One box of tissues;
One roll of paper towels;
24 pencils (please sharpen six or more of them);
4 glue sticks;
4 black EXPO dry erase markers;
Antibacterial wipes (for desk cleaning);
Antibacterial liquid hand gel.

Please do not send the following:

Scissors;
Staples;
Tape;
Liquid glue;
Crayons (we have plenty);
Colored pencils;
Fancy or mechanical pencils;
Fancy folders;
Fancy erasers;
Big pencil boxes;
Toys.
